毎年冬になると聴きたくなるのがこの作品。フランスのプログレバンドTai Phongによる1975年のデビューアルバムだ。
中心になっていたのはカーンとタイのベトナム人移民の兄弟。70年代に3枚のアルバムのみ残して解散したが、中でも日本のサムライが印象的に描かれた1stと2ndは知る人ぞ知る名盤だった。
本国でシングルヒットした②に象徴されるように全体的に叙情的でメロディアスな作風となっているが、要所々々で転調してテクニカルな展開を魅せるところがプログレッシブロックとしての魅力でもある。少年のような澄んだハイトーンボーカルとそれに重なるコーラス、ピアノやバイオリンの調べ、泣きのギター、叙景的な歌詞と、とにかく全てがただただ美しい。これを聴いているといつも静かに降り積もる白い雪景色を想起させられる。
今年11月にパリでISによる同時多発テロで100人近くの人が亡くなるという惨劇が起きた。特に被害が大きかったのがロックのライブ会場だった。かつてのフランスへの移民が奏でたこの美しい曲と歌詞をもって静かに祈りを捧げたい。
